the white house is talking about senate democrats about what senate majority leader harry reid will have to cobble together when the senate reconvenes on the 27th and that's really the last-ditch effort. it's seen as the senate trying to do something that can also pass the house, so this is exactly what you would expect. the real problem though is as of this morning, just a week out from when the fiscal cliff is expected to hit. there's no discussions between congressional democrats and congressional republicans even on the staff level. this is what democratic and republican sources are telling me, and overall just to remind people, instead of this being -- here's what we expect. instead of this being some big bill to try to deal with the long-term fiscal health of the country which is what the fiscal cliff was supposed to be an incentive to do, we're expecting now that this is just some measure to avert the fiscal cliff which is the tax hikes, the spending cuts, each if they deal with the spending cuts and we're waiting to see what the measure will look like. i know what a hard-hitting

harry reid is there. let's hope that they get there and for the sake of the country for the sake of our stability of our fiscal well, they get together on a plan that works. nobody will get 100% of what they want. hopefully somebody -- we get enough of what we want to keep the wheels turning. >> ana, do you think speaker boehner's leadership is suffering while this crisis continues? >> you know, i think a little bit of both to be honest with you. certainly he tried to get something from his caucus last week. that didn't work. that was not a strong moment for him. it was a moment of weakness. but at the same time, i think he looks like he's really trying. and it also paints the picture and makes it obvious that, you know, he's not just negotiating with president obama. he also has to then come back and sell to his own people, sell to his own caucus, which at points may be even more difficult than negotiating with the white house. so it tells us all just how complex a situation we are dealing with. >> now,

what's happening right now is harry reid and mitch mcconnell, the top democrat and republican in the senate are still negotiating their staffs at this hour. they are supposed to be working until about 3:00 this afternoon when the plan would be presented to both caucuses. as we understand what they are talking about is the bare minimum. basically the senate negotiating to extend those tax cuts for everybody making under $250,000 a year and do extend unemployment benefits also they're talking about trying to do something to stop the automatic spending cuts that go into effect but don't expect a deal on that. now, dan, if a deal can be reached today, the senate would begin looking at it, begin debating it and then you would see vote tomorrow in the senate and possibly a vote tomorrow in the house because as you know, if we get to tuesday without any of this happening, off the cliff. >> and, jon, you say off the cliff by tuesday, just two days left, how damaging would it be if we do indeed go off the cliff even if we bungee up a few days or weeks after. >> the impact on everybody's taxes
